Eden Welfare has been established to provide education and support to the BDSM community and public services who engage with them in order to better manage the risks associated with the BDSM community and the intersections between the ethical non-monogamy (ENM), kink, and chemsex circles. From my years of experience within these communities, I am aware that drug abuse and intimate partner violence are significant, yet are under-reported due to the stigmatized context of these offences. This stigma prevents members of this community from being able to safely access external support services. My first-hand experiences of these spaces and the associated barriers to adequate support showed me that there is a need for greater understanding within support services such as the NHS, social services, and police to adequately support these sub-cultures.
Along with privately training safeguards within the community, I am engaging within a MSc to develop my existing work within safeguarding and harm reduction. There is a gap within the research into sexual and Intimate Partner Violence and how these issues effect the BDSM, ENM and queer communities and their intersections. This will also be vital for the work that I do with members of the Sex Worker Union as the prioritization of academia over lived experience for policy change is one that, although being unworked, is still held as a norm.
